When did you feel the most supported in your career?
My name is Kavitha Beenukumar, a Deloitte Risk & Financial Advisory Senior Manager in the digital identity practice, Deloitte & Touche LLP.
During the 15 years of my professional journey, there have been several instances where I was helped and supported by the people around me at different inflection points in my career. But the one instance that stood out was when Deloitte’s Global Identity Practice came together to help me with my relocation to Canada temporarily.
Throughout the course of my career, I’ve relocated five times, across 3 countries: including the moves within India; the move from Bangalore, India to Houston, Texas, U.S.; Houston to Toronto, Canada; and Toronto to New York, US. The relocations were all personal with the sole intention of staying closer to family.
About 4 years into joining Deloitte, I had to relocate from the U.S. to Canada for a year due to a personal need. I was worried about the impact a change of location, at that time, would have on my career. But, when I approached Deloitte identity practice leaders I trusted and worked with closely, looking for inputs, I was amazed at the support I received. The Deloitte US identity practice leader at the time introduced me to his Canadian counterpart quickly and directly, so that I could get answers to my questions about the process, about the practice, and the role I would play. Deloitte’s relocation support program made my moving experience less stressful. And, Deloitte Canada leadership helped me integrate into that practice, inclusive of giving me strategic opportunities to grow my career, which has helped me through today—as I’ve since relocated back to the U.S. to rejoin U.S. Deloitte digital identity practice.
My experience has taught me to be open to new opportunities and build strong and trusted relationships along the way. You will be surprised by the support you will receive when you need it.
