What do you do and what is it about your job that gets you out of bed in the morning?
I am a Principal Software Engineer on the R&D team for CyberArk’s Identity Security and Access Management Solutions. As part of our daily work, we build awesome engineering solutions and solve problems for our customers.
What I love about my job is the challenges it poses, which brings out the best in me, and also the fact that our organizational leaders always acknowledge the good work we do. This combination makes my job very fulfilling.
I feel every morning I am given a new chance to go out and make this world a better place, in terms of what I can do with technology, how I can solve a problem, and how I can help my colleagues to bring out the best in themselves. I feel excited to have an opportunity to witness the work of some of the most passionate people and brilliant minds in my day-to-day job.
The work culture of my organization is extraordinary. When I go to work, it almost feels as though I am moving from one part of the family to another.
Identity security as a domain always keeps us on our toes. There are always new ways of making identity seamless for the customers. In addition, creatively thinking of vulnerabilities, and tightening the security of the product at various levels is an interesting and challenging process.
What sparked your interest in software engineering?
When I was in college I was introduced to programming. Problem-solving and constant learning are the two factors that interested me in picking up Software Engineering for a career and have kept me completely gripped by it. The innovations and technological advances we see in our field, plus the way technology is always improving the lives of people have always fascinated me.
What is the most important lesson you have learned along the way?
The most important lesson I learned is that there is always something to learn from a situation or a person. Once I realized this, there has never been a single moment that I have spent in regret.
For every situation, good or bad, I always go back and introspect on what is the lesson in it for me. If the lesson is learned/realized, then the situation has served its purpose. I never waste my time basking on success or regretting a mistake. I try my best to treat both situations as equals and as building blocks helping me in becoming a better version of myself.
Why is diversity so important to you?
From an individual's perspective, diversity in our associations helps us understand that there are alternate truths for people of diverse backgrounds. If we are able to acknowledge and appreciate this fact, then we can contribute better towards nurturing an enriching coexistence for humankind globally.
In business, diversity helps bring in newer ideas and unique perspectives that lead to greater innovations. When building solutions for global customers, having a team of people with varied backgrounds works best to also connect better with our customers and their needs. In short, diversity is very much a core ingredient for any successful global organization.
What book/film/piece of art would you recommend to your fellow members? Why?
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is the one that has truly moved me in ways difficult to describe. things like, the characters of men and women with strength in their hearts, the willpower and tenacity of such people in defending the goodness of the world, and the friendship and honour between the ring bearers warms our hearts and inspires us to try and inculcate the same in our relationships because friendship is the basis of all relationships. The characters’ victory over their own evils and weaknesses in this story, which was not an easy feat, is depicted very beautifully and helps us reassure our faith in the goodness of the world.
What advice would you give to the teenage 'you'?
Be a little less impulsive and more patient with every situation. If you look clearly, all problems are self-created, and everything else is only an opportunity to learn something new and explore the unknown. Good things will come when the time is right. May the hope of success be more of a driving force for all your endeavours, instead of the fear of failure.
