Mini-interview about the ID Code of Conduct Literature Review with co-author, Kim Fernandes

We had a discussion about the ID Code of Conduct Literature review with Kim Fernandes, this is what they had to say...

Can you describe to me what the literature review is?

Kim:

The literature review discusses the development of digital ID systems across several contexts as they relate to how peoples' everyday lives are governed. In attending to the foundations and consequences of digital ID systems, "Digital ID: Emerging Trends, Debates and Controversies" outlines the affordances and limits of modern-day identification systems and the greater visibility that they enable. It brings work by non-governmental organizations in conversation with news media, academic scholarship and a host of other sources to contribute to the ongoing global conversation on the impacts of digitizing identification for several marginalized groups.

What was your role in the literature review? Why did you want to be involved?

Kim:

The literature review has been an incredible opportunity to contribute to discussions on the impact of digital identity globally. Although my dissertation began by examining some of the impacts of Aadhaar, India's national biometric ID system, on people with disabilities in India, I wanted to be involved in writing this review because it allowed me the chance to collaborate with Eve, who works on digital ID in an entirely different context. This broad collaboration allowed us to think of some of the many ways these identity systems can both engender inclusion for some individuals and groups while also being significantly exclusionary for others.

What impact do you think/hope this will have on the identity sector?

Kim:

I hope that this review will add to the rich set of scholarship in the identity sector through its work of bringing together several cases from different contexts to think about emerging trends in the way the state attends to marginalized groups across the world. Several of these conversations have enriched my own research and thinking on citizenship, and I hope that this review will both summarize a wide range of scholarship while also attending to the possibilities for a more inclusive digital future.

Thank you for your time, Kim!
